Rescued laying hens, need homes at end of august, urgent
We have been offered 1,100 unwanted hens for the end of August, on an "all or nothing" basis - either we find homes for them all, or they all go to the slaughterhouse. These hens are from Buckinghamshire, and if the rescue goes ahead, we will be delivering them to our co-ordination centres across the south of England, including Trowbridge and Bristol. (If it does not go ahead, we will transfer any rehomers to our waiting list for a later rescue).
We are therefore looking for people to rehome these hens. They are young birds which (as with all commercial laying hens) are being slaughtered after one year in lay, when their production drops from 6 eggs per week to 5, which renders them no longer commercially viable. However, they have much life in them still and will continue to lay for some years.
They make very friendly, engaging pets and are no harder to look after than rabbits. We ask for a minimum donation of £1 per hen as a contribution to the rescue costs. (No profit is made)
If you would like to offer a home to some of these hens, please complete an application form via our website (www.northlondonhenrescue.org.uk - application form is under "adopting hens")
