Local residents are objecting Somer Housing and B&NES council proposals to transform the hostel for “vulnerable people” at Caroline House/Longacre from 17 to 65 units (if not more).
We have no objection to the fact that vulnerable individuals are already accommodated in the area. However, we are very concerned at the chosen location for this new scheme, given the long history of crime that has been committed in the immediate vicinity of the Longacre Tavern (e.g. anti social behaviours, drug dealings, a murder…).
Despite many offers on these buildings from businesses for commercial use and an approach by local residents in the Snow Hill area to take over the buildings for community use, the Council has continued to work with Somer Housing only to support the hostel extension.
Placing so many vulnerable persons in such a dangerous location is wrong. The intention of Somer Housing and the Council is also to accommodate children and families in this location.
At public meetings not a single local resident has spoken in favour of the development and the lack of genuine consultation from Somer with the local residents is an additional cause for concern.
