Surely one of the best box-sets ever, in terms of an introduction (for those wondering what all the fuss is about) or, a representation of the best (for those who are already afficianados) - this is just about as good as it gets. The "dames", the "world-weary" heroes, the lean, strong story-lines, and, the glorious black and white shadows of the night scenes - which colour can never emulate, although 'The Big Steal' is actually the colorised version - they're all here.

* This is the Limited Edition set in Flip-Top Cigarette Box packaging - NOT the standard box re-issue. *

The Killers (1946): Two professional killers invade a small town and kill a gas station attendant, ex-boxer 'The Swede' (Burt Lancaster) who's expecting them. Insurance investigator Reardon pursues the case against the orders of his boss, who considers it trivial. Weaving together threads of the Swede's life, Reardon uncovers a complex tale of treachery and crime, all linked with gorgeous, mysterious Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner, redefining the words 'sultry' and 'sexy').

Double Indemnity (1943) : Insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) calls at the house of femme fatale Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) in order to renew her husband's insurance policy. An immediate attraction sparks between the two, and gradually Phyllis seduces Walter into conspiring with her to murder her husband.

The Big Steal (1949) : Army officer Drake Halliday (Robert Mitchum) finds himself on the run after he is framed for a payroll theft. A typically laconic Robert Mitchum stars as Lieutenant Duke Halliday in this terse, efficient noir, as he takes off on a chase from Verz Cruz into the heart of Mexico after the real thief, Jim Fiske (Patrick Knowles), in an effort to clear himself. Joining him in the search is Fiske's jilted fiancée, Joan Graham (Jane Greer). Close on the heels of both is police captain Vince Blake (William Bendix), not to mention Mexican inspector Colonel Ortega (Ramon Novarro). Along the way, Duke and Joan's breakneck pursuit is strewn with comedic obstacles including a herd of goats, an oxcart, and an impressively underachieving Mexican road crew.

Crossfire (1947) : Detective Finlay (Robert Young) is appointed to investigate when Jewish GI Joseph Samuels (Sam Levene) is beaten to death. Years of police work have taught Detective Finlay that where there's crime, there's motive. But he finds no usual motive when investigating the beating death of a man. The man was killed because he was a Jew. "Hate," Finlay says, "is like a gun." Robert Young portrays Finlay, Robert Mitchum is a laconic army sergeant assisting in the investigation of G.I. suspects and Robert Ryan plays a vicious bigot in a landmark film noir nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Edward Dmytryk (Murder, My Sweet) directs, draping the genre's stylistic backdrops and flourishes around a topic rarely before explored in films: anti-Semitism in the U.S. Here, Hollywood took aim at injustice and caught bigotry in a Crossfire.

Out Of The Past (1947) : Private detective Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) hired by gambler Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas) to find Sterling's girlfriend after she shoots him and takes off with $40,000 of his money.

The Blue Dahlia (1946) : Johnny Morrison (Alan Ladd) comes home from the war and discovers his wife, Helen (Doris Dowling), has been doing her bit on the home front, sure enough. After a heated and violent argument he storms out of their house. Later that night she's murdered - and Johnny winds up the prime suspect. Now to prove his innocence Johnny must find the real culprit.

The Glass Key (1942) : Local politician Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy) who built his little empire by turning a blind eye and granting favours, decides to back the anti-mob reform candidate, Ralph Henry, in the governor's race after he gets a look at Henry's daughter Janet (Veronica Lake).

This Gun For Hire (1942) : Philip Raven (Alan Ladd) a hit man is double-crossed by nightclub owner Willard Gates (Laird Cregar). Ladd sets out for revenge, with Veronica Lake as Ellen Graham, his platinum blond bombshell companion. A hired gun, Raven is kind to everyone but his targets, and when he kills an extortionist and receives stolen money in compensation, he becomes the target of a Senate investigation that leads him to set his gunsight on Ellen

Farewell My Lovely (1944) : Detective Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) hired by ex-convict 'Moose' Malloy to find his former girlfriend, Vera. Marlowe finds himself double-booked, however, when he accepts another job - buying back a jade necklace stolen from the young and beautiful Mrs Grayle (Claire Trevor), whose husband is a much older wealthy man. Little does Marlowe realize that the two cases are inextricably linked.
